Guestbook Max's StoryI first met Max while volunteering at a human society. Max called home a small cage on the second of three rows of cats in a tiny room. He greeted me each day with a paw poking through the door and his claws snagging the corner of my shirt. As soon as I unlatched his cage, Max fearlessly jumped into my arms. The funniest part in this process was that he pedaled his back legs in the air like a bicycle, as if that propelled him to me. Max quickly captured my heart. I learned that Max had been at the shelter for almost a year and that others had adopted him, but returned him shortly thereafter. I noticed he wobbled a bit and preferred resting on his side to standing, but he had a unique charm about him. When it was time for me to move and start my life after college, I knew I had to take Max with me. I had a doctor test Max to determine what was wrong with him. This was when I first learned about CH. The vet told me Max's condition would never improve, but he could lead a normal, happy life. So, Max said good-bye to his cage, hello to a new friend, TJ (another cat I adopted from the same shelter) and hello to a new home with me. My time with Max has been nothing but entertaining. Initially, Max was so skinny and uncoordinated, that I had no idea what to expect. Max seemed really bothered by not being able to keep up with TJ. Within six months, Max taught himself how to jump, run and eat by imitating TJ. Of course, this did not happen without a few bumps, bruises and funny moments along the way. I will never forget the night when Max discovered he could hiss. TJ had enough of Max's wrestling and hissed at him. Max hissed back immediately and scared himself so much he fell off the footstool. Max soon became the center of attention elsewhere. His annual exam at the doctor included veterinary students summoned into the little exam room to see a CH cat. Max would jump up and down on the bench and parade around in front of everyone with their encouragement. Needless to say, he loves going to the doctor's office now. Six years have passed and Max lost his buddy TJ, gained a new friend, Riley, and moved into a bigger home with stairs - just another obstacle he has overcome. Although Max has the run of the house, he would tell you he now calls home a large sunroom with soft chairs perfect for bird watching. The rest of his day is spent cuddling his favorite toys - 'Mr. Sock'. Max's spirit is endearing. Nothing seems impossible in his world. Too bad everyone does not think that way. email address Pictures of MaxMax Max Playing Holding hands Riley
