Guestbook Eli's StoryAnd last but not least is Eli. He was born to a lovely sleek black cat abandoned on the streets, but rescued in time to give birth in a safe secure home. I remember getting the late night call "Jan, she's having babies and I'm videotaping it"! On that evening April 25 1996 three tiny white kittens came into the world. I had a hunch that they would be siamese, and sure enough they grew and developed points. After a few weeks it was apparent that they were all neurologically impaired. Eli always managed to get his share of his mother's milk, and grew and grew. His two littermates were able to get around well enough but Eli was in much worse shape. Knowing my weakness for challenged kitties, my friend Debbie asked me if I could try to help him. She couldn't handle him any longer and talked about having him euthanized. {I knew she didn't have the heart to though!}. I sight unseen was willing to give this tiny pussy willow a chance. I was floored at just how floppy and uncoordinated the tiny guy was. Everything was a crash, bang affair with Eli. But he deserved a chance. I took a long roll of jersey tubing and made a sling to support his hind end till he got the idea of how his body was going to work. For a few hours we would "walk". That might or might not have worked , but Eli learned quickly what he could and couldn't do. Stairs, BOOM, CRASH, BOOM, ..not! Climbing things, yes! Jumping, when on a bed, terrific fun, like a trampoline. He gears himself up and leaps unbelievable distances. I don't look at him as a "defective" cat. Unusual yes, handsome definitely! He is the most neurologically impaired cats I've ever seen spending much of his day flopping around on the floor. Dinner time it's wrap and rub around my ankles "I love you mama" style. In his mind he's as normal as the rest of the cats. He's a very affectionate and stunningly beautiful cat. And as messy as his eating style is, I don't regret taking "The Rocket Powered Rubber Flounder" in! He's one of a fantastic kind!
