Cherokee's Story

I now own and adopted another CH kitty from the North Shore Animal League. To date I have 4 and still have the heart to take in more whenever the opportunity comes up. Cherokee was adopted around October of 99 when I was contacted from the facility that there was a young kitten with the handicap CH but was very severe. I made arrangements to meet with the staff and the young girl who was fostering her at home. She was so small and fragile, but had a huge heart filled with lots of love to give. Cherokee cannot hold her balance at all, even though she tries hard she just seems to roll herself to her destination. At first she wasn't able to drink, so she had to be fed with a dropper and spoon-fed her solid food. Now that she has grown and much older now she has adapted to getting along the best way she knows how. She now drinks and eats, but has to lie on her side so she doesn't fall into her bowl. As for the litter box training she also uses only shredded paper and does manage to crawl out from her bed to get to do her thing. The others watch over her, and she is no longer afraid to lay in the middle of traffic because she knows that none would hurt her, even the dogs.
She just recently got herself spayed and has been sleeping a lot and finally after 2 days decided to eat and drink. She is very smart despite her severe handicap because when she is hungry and wants something she'll roll herself into the kitchen and stare at you until you notice her. I've worked with her and tried to get her to balance herself but no luck, could be due to the fact that one of her rear feet is slightly deformed. I give her credit to still to this day keep trying. She is quite a sweetheart....
