Pebbles Story

The first time I ever found out about Cerebral Hypoplasia was through my vet who had a cat named Kevin and he was the office watch cat. I loved the site of this poor thing and wanted to have one of my own.

Last year I worked for a short time at the North Shore Animal League and loved caring for all types of animals. I especially took time in getting the older cats adopted and was successful at it.

One evening I spotted this small orange and white who could barely stand up in her cage. I knew this was a CH kitten as the tag on the cage said special adoption.

She and her sister who is not effected weren’t adopted by time closing hours came. The next day I was there at opening and had my boyfriend adopt them for me.

To this day she is such a joy to watch. She manages to get herself around and is without a doubt helped by all the other cats. They clean her, watch over her and protect her when she's in view. She can definitely jump as I’ve witnessed this feat when she hurls herself onto the bed.

Her eating habits are sloppy, but she does manage to the best of her ability and that’s all I can ask.

I’m working on her putting on some weight as she only weighs nearly 5 lbs. I’ve had problems with one of her ears for some time, she was tested for mites with negative results. I’ve known for sometime something wasn’t right with her ear as it always was draining discharge and had a fowl smell, along with that the same coming from one side of her nose. I have to constantly clean her air-passages so she can breathe. Now she has a tumor that was growing in the ear and most likely will get it biopsied and possible surgery to remove it.

Pebbles is in my opinion is a severe case of CH.

She has a daily routine that is kept simple and she does get excitable if something changes, so we never alter what she knows. It took time for her to feel secure and safe to sit in your lap so now she comes over every morning after she eats and waits to be picked up, from there she likes to get her nose rubbed.

She loves to sleep on the bed with the others or in her favorite bed with a large dog pillow.

She is quite smart and training her was no different from your average cat, except for the fact she doesn’t use litter of any kind she likes shredded newspaper. Her training in the beginning was a little awkward, but she’s learned to master just about anything and she is helped whenever she feels she’s in distress.

She is very much loved just like all the others and is considered extra special. The look they give and how they react to you is somehow a little different. They let you know they are grateful that someone loves them even if there not all that perfect and there challenges is what makes it all the more rewarding.
