Tony & Mina's Story

A Tale of Two Wobblers

"Well, the only way I can think of to describe it that their legs are spread apart in a clumsy way. Oh - and they fall down." That was the response to my question regarding the neurological disability affecting the cats I was about to meet. A brother and sister pair that could not be separated unless absolutely necessary and suffering from a "drunken" disorder. They had been found with dozens of other cats struggling to survive, living in one home with a mentally-ill woman in the midwest. I wasn't sure about adopting them... I thought 2 disabled cats would be too much.

But then I met them. They had these beautiful, smiling, expressive eyes. Their body language said they were terrified of this new person but their eyes were eager for love and affection. I called and asked about adopting them the very same night. I would find a way to make it work!

Tony and Mina took a few days to come out from under the bed, but they are now the Princess and King of the apartment and are the happiest, most outgoing and playful cats around. They eagerly approach visitors as new petting and playmate prospects and are happiest when I have company. A little love and some minor accommodations go a long with for CH kitties! My guys have steps to the litterbox with slip-resistant traction covering, carpeted steps and/or guard-railed ramp to the window ledges and bed and lots of little boosts here and there if needed.

They have invented their own playful routines and continue to surprise me. Currently, they both climb the stairs and flop onto my bed around 10 pm at night waiting for me, sitting close the edge, watching the door for my arrival (they hope) in PJ's. When I climb into bed, they both snuggle up and we all fall fast asleep.

Almost from day one they have been my personal welcoming committee when I come home from work. They are both sound asleep near the door until they hear me approaching, at which time the meowing, dancing tail whirls and wobbly prancing begin. Still half-asleep, they fall all over each other gleefully celebrating my arrival. As soon as I come in they do a happy cat stretch at my feet and wait for the welcome home petting. Who would not want to come home to such a welcome?

Six a.m. is "time to wake up and pet the kitty." Not my favorite routine, but I can't say no to their happy faces full of anticipation just dying for me to get up. In the beginning, they would crouch real low laying next to me on the bed, as close to my face as possible, pink nose to my cheek... then patiently study my eyelids just waiting for them to open. As soon as I sensed them and opened my eyes, the hysterical frenzy would begin! She's awake! Yippee! Hurry, grab a glitter ball before she falls back asleep! (Hey - I can always take a nap later if I need one.)

They are best buds and act incredibly loving to one another - I can see why the animal rescue did not want to separate them. I am just lucky they have accepted me into their family. I hope their story inspires others to consider adopting special needs cats. I feel very lucky to have found them. They give back to me 110% of what I give them.
