OSCARS STORY........By Donna & Dave

Oscar was originally an outside cat when we discovered him in the yard. We had no idea what was wrong with him, but we immediately fell in love with him. It looked like he was about 1 year old. We took care of him for 3 years while he was outside. We built a house for him, constantly fed him and shoveled the snow so he would have a path to walk.
When we got our own apartment together, we brought Oscar in with us. We sectioned off a long hallway in our apartment for Oscar to roam, as we were afraid he might hurt himself while we were not home.
We had brought Oscar to several vets to inquire about his condition. The responses that we got were that he was probably hit by a car, or had a balance disorder.(Ignorant) It wasn't until we came across your CH cat website that we discovered he had Cerebellar Hypoplasia. The afflictions of this condition matched him perfectly.... He would fall down after a couple of steps, his back legs would point outwards, and he would peck at his food like a chicken and throw his head back to swallow. Oscar also had very few teeth in his mouth (about 4).We don't know if this was a result of his condition, or if it was from falling down on the concrete many times, when he was living outside. As a result of his few teeth (or condition), Oscar's tongue would hang out of his mouth making him even cuter.
Oscar recently passed away in December of 2004. We think he was about 12-14 years old. It was not until after his death that we did some research on the internet as we had mentioned before, and discovered this site. We found your site very helpful, and felt comfort in finally knowing what his condition really was. We learned that we were not the only ones who had a cat that had this handicap. We do plan to adopt another Ch cat someday when the time is right.
Despite Oscar's handicap, he was still very playful, and one of the most incredibly loving and affectionate animals that we have ever known. We gave Oscar lots of attention, pampering and love, knowing that he had led a very hard life. Oscar was very special to us and we are forever grateful that he had crossed our paths...............Donna & Dave-
